In Boulder I’ve been going to a tiny Anytime Fitness gym in a strip mall at least once a week. My two favorite things about it are: 1. it’s always 90% empty and 2. the classic rock radio station that is on, constantly.
For obvious reasons, I do not like crowded gyms: long wait times for the squat rack which lead me to leaving (and instead thinking, “hey how ‘bout a snack?”); creepy fellers giving unwanted advice; the people.
I don’t actually like classic rock. In fact, I would say that, in high school, when the common refrain was, “I listen to everything except country, I HATE COUNTRY”1 I substituted classic rock. That said, with the dated equipment and the radio hosts regaling rock’n’roll highlights from concerts from 1970’s — I feel pleasantly swept back in time (so long as nobody in Gymshark shows up *cutely* and breaks the spell). I’ve forgone the headphones and instead embraced doing bicep curls while mouthing the words to “I Want to Rock And Roll All Nite” (…and party ev-er-ry day) by Kiss to myself in the mirror.
